Adoption Programs - go here to report your volunteerism!
The Adoption programs provide for public involvement in controlling litter along selected sections of public areas. These areas are stretches of county roads, stretches of shoreline, public areas within the city of Hot Springs, and streets. Businesses, individuals, families and other groups are invited to adopt a section of these public areas for the purpose of litter control and to receive recognition for their participation in the program. Media coverage will be encouraged to help promote the program and recognize the adoptee.
The following guidelines apply to any adoptee in the program:
- The spot to be adopted can be of any size subject to Commission
approval. Eligible areas may be chosen by the adoptee, in cooperation with the Commission, with special consideration to safety.
- Litter pick-up should be done at least twice a year (preferably four).
The recommended adoption period shall be a minimum of one year, renewable at the request of the adoptee.
- The program is not intended as a means of providing a public forum for
groups, businesses, or individuals to use in promoting name recognition or political causes. The Commission therefore reserves the right to deny adoption to any prospective adoptee. The Adoption Program is offered to all eligible persons regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, gender, disability, or sexual preference.
- No person under the age of eleven will be permitted to pick up litter
within the County right of way. All persons between the ages of eleven and eighteen must be accompanied by at least one adult for every five persons under the age of eighteen.
The Hot Springs/Garland County Beautification Commission will normally supply safety vests, disposable gloves, litter bags, and grabbers for volunteer use with this program. These items may be picked up from the Commission office at: 118 Second Street, Suite O, Hot Springs, AR 71913
The adoptee must make prior arrangements with the City Sanitation Dept (501-321-6911) or Garland County Sheriff's Department Litter Patrol to pick up the bagged trash by calling 501-622-3660. The trash must be left in a safe and convenient area for collection by truck and/or trailer. After each pick-up, the adoptee must file a report within two weeks giving the number of participants, approximate number of hours taken, the number of bags filled, and condition of the area.
Participants are strongly encouraged to schedule at least one pick-up to coincide with the Great American Trash Off in May and/or Trash Bash, the first weekend after Labor Day.
